This blog is my own, any thoughts expressed in this website does not represent the thoughts or opinion of any healthcare entity.
My name is Dr. Chinye
Azuh, I am a medical doctor, in my off time I write a blogs which I’m happy
to share with you all. The blogs range from medical information to medical
arts. Feel free to tell me what topics you would like to see.
This season’s theme is one for interviews. Occasionally, I
like to break from the strict medical and delve into the medical arts. In this post, I sit down with my colleague Dr.
Robert to get his take on memorable medical shows, see below for this fantastic
interview!
Dr. Chinye Azuh: Dr. Robert, I
am glad to have you with us. To those who do not know, Dr. Robert is a
fantastic physician with a true love and passion for his patients. He practices Internal medicine. What people
don’t know about him, is he is quite the movie buff and also enjoys a good
medical show.
Dr Robert: That is correct Dr. Chinye Azuh I’m glad to be joining you for this medical creative arts
blog post.
Dr. Chinye Azuh: In your opinion what do you think are the most
influential medical shows out there, to you at least.
Dr Robert: Wow, that is a tough question.
Dr. Chinye Azuh: Absolutely. Just
off the top of my head I can name, ER which most famously starred George
Clooney and Julianna Margulies. There’s Greys Anatomy, Scrubs, The
Resident, Amsterdam, and the list goes on and on.
Dr Robert: So, I feel like a distinction can be made
between popularity and influential. Influence is unique for each person. I was
a big fan of Scrubs. I watched ER, but I do not think that show influenced me
as much as scrubs did. A show like ER might have been influential for people
who enjoyed a fast-paced work environment dealing with complex medical cases. I
feel like the show Scrubs focused a bit on how the health profession could shape
someone. In scrubs on the first day of a main character’s internship, you could
see he was a bit nervous. It showed his progression which was interesting. It
was not necessarily realistic, however.
Dr. Chinye Azuh: So,
I know people absolutely adore the television show Scrubs. Some people
have watched all the seasons twice. What is it about Scrubs people like?
Dr Robert: I think it is because it told the personal
stories of the characters a bit more and not necessarily from a medical aspect.
The show kept it real as much as possible. Let us not forget that the comedy
was great. I also think another interesting medical show would be House.
The show House was less comedic. It was interesting from a diagnosis
standpoint but not overly realistic.
Each physician on that show had multiple specialized roles. For example,
the same doctor would be the hematologists, oncologist, internists, ob-gyn, surgeon,
and radiologist. They were kind of
everything all at once.
Dr. Chinye Azuh: Was there
anything memorable from the show House you felt was incredulous or
unrealistic?
Dr Robert: Yes, I remember an episode where the shows
doctors suspected their patient had been unknowingly poisoned. On the episode, they entered that person’s house
to search for that toxic substance. So many things were going on that just
would not happen in real life.
Dr. Chinye Azuh: Grey's
Anatomy was another popular medical show that has lasted a long time.
Dr Robert: Grey's Anatomy was very
Avant guard in terms of pushing the boundaries. They touched on medical and
social issues that were going on in society. We got to see a lot of personal stories of the
characters lives but with much embellishment. I suppose it’s the dramatization
of TV in general as shows need to be engaging enough to maintain viewership. I
will credit these medical shows for showing a broad range of diversity of
individuals in the medical field from all walks of life, ages, backgrounds, and
experiences.
Dr. Chinye Azuh: Well, this
has been a highly enjoyable topic in the medical arts. Glad to have you with us
today.
Dr Robert: Likewise, you all take care.
